Fitness at Big Rock Elementary
Big Rock Elementary in Chesaning, Michigan was a recipient of the"Building Healthy Communities" grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for the 2011-2012 school year. The funds from this grant allowed the school to purchase the HOPsports training system ($19,000) and the ORGANWISE GUYS nutrition education curriculum ($4,000). The teachers and staff made a comittment to increase the amount of physical activity each child receives everyday. The students had the chance to participate in "Walk to Scool day" on October 5, 2011. All students were dropped off at Cole Park (approximately 1/2 mile away from the school) and they walked to school along the sidewalks lined with High School students, community members, police, and firemen cheering them along the route.
During the school day students are encouraged to move their bodies as much as they can. Teachers take "Brain Breaks" (movement activities while learning about Math concepts or practicing spelling words), Wisercise activities(includes movement while doing daily chants), doing arm movements while walking down the hall, and use the HOPsports system whenever they get the opportunity. ROLL CALL, OrganWise Rules-Low Fat, High Fiber, Lots of Water, Exercise- can be heard throughout the halls. As a celebration for all the hard work the students and staff are doing this year to become healthy, Big Rock will host a 5K Run/Walk for the entire community and school.
